6 Ways to Celebrate Valentine’s Day In A Long-Distance Relationship
Valentine’s Day can be rough on anybody. For the be-coupled, it can be a real headache: the planning, the expectations, the price. For the singletons, well, those poor souls don’t need anyone else to tell them why being alone on Valentine’s is rough. Or, if you’re like me, an excuse to be a blob and eat all the food in the known universe.
But what about those in a unique situation: not single, but alone on Valentine’s? That’s right, I’m talking about the big-bad-wolf of relationships: the LDR. A little searching around reveals that around 14 Million Americans consider themselves to be in a Long-Distance Relationship. How to enjoy Valentines while separate from your honey can be a struggle. But luckily, we’re here to help with 6 tips for enjoying Valentin’s while in an LDR.
1. Send a Love Letter
This one takes a bit of effort, but in a world of instant messaging across continents, good-old fashioned snail mail can be a really touching gesture. Take the time to put down your feelings about them and entrust them to the mailman. “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night.” What a guy. If you’re single maybe hit him up.
2. Send a Care Package
Let’s stick to the theme of physical mail. Let your honey know how sweet you think they really are. Send them a package of all their favorite sweets and delights. Maybe send them a book or some other little present to occupy their time away from you.
3. Digital Dinner
Instead of going out, why not order in? Schedule an in-house dinner date. Go crazy and get delivery, preferably of the same cuisine. Revel in having a romantic dinner date without having to deal with all of the couples having relationship breakdowns around you. If you’re allergic to tomatoes, Karen, then why did you agree to Italian in the first place?
4. Go to the Movies
Why not go on a movie date? Pick the same film around the same time and come back together for a video call debrief. Interesting discussion is one of the best ways to strengthen a relationship. Why let a little distance get in the way.
5. Send a Video Message
Send a cute video so that your SO remembers what they signed up for. You can’t be together physically, like other couples, so make sure you see each other as much as possible. Even if it us just via the magic of the internet.
6. Message Often
Keep communication lines open. Message each other throughout the day, just to let your SO know you’re thinking of them. Don’t expect every message exchange to be a long odyssey of romantic missives. But just send little messages to let them know you’re thinking of them and miss them. Save up cool stickers and emoji that you think they’d like, cute love notes, whatever floats their boat.
